The BMDI Breast Cancer Support Group was formed in 1995 with the aim of providing support and up to date information on breast cancer. It is open to breast cancer patients, of all ages and clinical conditions, and provides an ideal opportunity to meet with others in similar circumstances.
The group offers a friendly and confidential environment where members provide each other with mutual support and encouragement based on shared experiences. Members at the monthly meetings are free to listen and observe or to contribute to the discussion, which includes up to date and topical information about breast cancer. An optional inexpensive meal at a local restaurant follows the meeting.
The BMDI Breast Cancer Support Group meets on the first Thursday of the month from 6-7.30pm, at BMDI House, 2nd level, 4-12 Blackwood Street, North Melbourne.
The group has strong links with rural breast cancer support groups, many of whose members attend and who then report back to their groups through their newsletters. Members of the group can provide accommodation for breast cancer patients from rural areas who wish to attend.
Convenor, Avis Macphee, is a member of the Board of Management of BreastScreen Victoria, member of the Board of Management of the Cancer Council of Victoria, Vice President of the Board of Management of the Victorian Breast Cancer Research Consortium and a member of the Board of Management of the Victorian Cancer Biobank.

Breast Cancer Support Group Mission Statement:
“It is the right of every woman diagnosed with breast cancer to decide what information and support is appropriate for her. Not all women wish to have detailed, complex information about breast cancer nor to join a support group. Membership of our group has allowed us the freedom to express the thoughts that others may not wish to hear, to acknowledge our fears of the unknown. Information obtained through the group enables us to make informed choices about what is right for us. We see our relationship with our medical practitioners as a partnership and for us knowledge is empowering.”
