Many residents throughout the state of Tasmania are required to attend hospitals in the Hobart area often for life saving treatment. Until recently, patients, their carers and families found the cost of overnight accommodation prohibitive to the extent that patients were foregoing treatment because they couldn’t afford the cost of a hotel or motel. The Fight Cancer Foundation saw a need to help all Tasmanians access Hobart’s hospitals by providing affordable, comfortable accommodation and in November 2008 opened the Fight Cancer Foundation’s John Opie House.
Housed in an historic building (1850) and only a 5 minute walk to the Royal Hobart Hospital, John Opie House can accommodate up to 20 patients and their carers, per night. The House has two communal lounge areas and a spacious kitchen and dining area where guests can relax, cook their meals and mingle.
Well equipped with electronic diversions to occupy minds both young and old, the warm and welcoming atmosphere is designed to give an often much needed boost to all who stay there.
