Mornington Racecourse – Gunnamatta Room
Saturday March 17, 2012

The 2012 Red Silks special event will be held on St Patrick’s Day and has been re-named Green Silks in honour of this iconic day.

Green Silks – a very special evening supporting Fight Cancer Foundation will be hosted by Channel 7’s Peter Mitchell and will feature the glorious music of the Royal Navy Band.

The evening will include a magnificent three course meal matched with fine wines, live and silent auctions, and live music to dance the night away.

Funds raised from Green Silks 2012 will support Fight Cancer Foundation to provide care, treatment and support for cancer patients and their families.

Fight Cancer Foundation also funds research into finding a cure and better treatment methods for cancer and other life threatening illnesses and provides accommodation centres close to major hospitals for patients and their families needing ongoing treatment. Many people from the Mornington Peninsula area have been treated over the years at Melbourne’s major hospitals and many children treated at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

St Patrick’s Day is widely celebrated around the world, especially in Australia, as well as Great Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina and New Zealand. Today, St. Patrick’s Day is probably the most widely celebrated saints’ day in the world.

Tickets to Red Silks are available through the Mornington Racecourse on

Proudly supported by Mornington Racing Club and Guinot.

This purpose built centre, designed to provide comfortable and affordable accommodation for patients and their carers from southern NSW and north-eastern Victoria, has gained tremendous local support from the local Rotary, Lions and Zonta Clubs.

The total cost of the project is $5.5 million and we have received a grant of $1.5 million from the Federal Government and $750,000 from the New South Wales State Government and $1,190,000 has been raised thus far from the local community. But we still have a way to go to reach our target.

Fight Cancer Foundation’s other two accommodation centres, BMDI Rotary House in North Melbourne and John Opie House in Hobart both provide safe and affordable, accommodation for patients and their families. The North Melbourne house has provided a ‘home away from home’ for more than 58 long term stay cancer patients and their families, while the John Opie House Hobart has in 2011 alone, housed 300 patients and carers from across Tasmania, inter-state and overseas.

The BMDI Cord Blood Bank has banked its 10,000th cord and released 400 cords for life-saving transplants for patients unable to be matched with a suitable bone marrow donor, a milestone and reminder that every cord blood unit, offers a second chance of life for a patient awaiting a transplant.

More than 180,000 Australian donors are registered on the Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry, linked to the international registry, providing access to 10 million potential donors.

Our 2011 fundraisers – the Moorilla Breakfast in Hobart, Diner Rouge at Bistro Thierry in Melbourne, the Paspaley Cocktail Party in Sydney and our signature event The Red Ball were outstanding successes and we thank everyone involved for their support.

Footy Colours Day is our major national event and attracted hundreds of thousands of participants from around the country.

We could not continue our work without the dedication of our Patrons, Ambassadors, volunteer board members and associate board members, office staff, corporate supporters and the selfless volunteers who are fundamental to our success. We could not continue our work without their unfailing support, and we thank each and every one of them.

Thanks also to our regular financial donors who continue to support our work, for without you, we could not achieve our vision of giving hope and saving lives of those living with cancer.

On behalf of the Foundation I would like to wish you a very safe and Happy Festive Season.

Eric Wright, Managing Director

A vintage circus tent at Burnley Oval was the venue for La Bal du Rouge au Cirque. The Big Top was transformed into a glittering 5 star arena.

The night was a great success with the support of our sponsors,Foxtel, Paspaley, Channel 7, The Hour Glass and Lojac and our incomparable hosts, Deborra-lee Furness and Peter Mitchell.

Bidding was frantic for both the live and silent auctions. Patrons showed their generosity in the pledge to support the ongoing work of the Foundation.

The Silver Circus troupe provided outstanding entertainment. It seemed the whole audience held their breath as three motorcycles whipped around within inches of each other in the Cage of Death.
Guests danced the night away to the irresistible sounds of Discorama, the best dance band in town!

It is no wonder the Red Ball is one of Melbourne’s premier charity events.

The Foundation would like to extend special thanks to the Red Ball committee for the months of preparation, and the volunteers who worked tirelessly prior, during and after the event. Their dedication and support were crucial to the success of the ball.

Many thanks to the brilliant team at Trumpet Events for creating a night to remember.

To view photos of this fantastic event, please click here.

In 2012, the 20th Annual Red Ball will be an event you won’t want to miss.

If you would like to be included on the Red Ball invitation list, please contact the Foundation on 03 9342 7888.

IT’S STARTED!!!

Excitement is growing! Building has commenced on the site of the Albury Wodonga Carer Accommodation Centre. The 20-bed project is expected to be completed by Christmas 2012. Fundraising continues with a car raffle which will be launched soon. To read the latest press on the project, please click here Border Mail 10 January 2012, Border Mail 16 January 2012 and Fight Cancer News Summer 2012

The Fight Cancer Foundation in partnership with Rotary, Lions and Zonta service clubs, launched the capital appeal for the Albury Wodonga Accommodation Centre on 23 February 2011 at the Commercial Club in Albury.

The appeal kicked off with a donation of $100,000 from the three service clubs and two private donations of $25,000 from Tonia Timmermans and the children of Alf and Jo-Anne Armstrong.

The centre is critical to the Albury Wodonga region. Stage One, a 20 room accommodation centre for patients, carers and families, will be built adjacent to the Albury Base Hospital. It will provide state of the art, affordable, short term and long term housing for those from the surrounding region needing to access the Albury Wodonga hospitals and who would otherwise have to meet the cost of commercial accommodation or travel long distances daily.

The accommodation centre will alleviate the worry of where to stay and how to fund those stays for patients and carers. It will provide a vital piece of health infrastructure in the Albury Wodonga region and the outlying communities that are serviced by the hospitals.

Essential Energy, recognising the important significance of the project to the region, has joined as a major sponsor by donating a 500kVa padmount transformer to support the future electricity needs of the accommodation centre.

Coming on board is the Cancer Council of NSW which has donated $300.000 to the project. The Foundation, in collaboration with the Cancer Council of NSW, envisages the accommodation centre as the hub of cancer support for the whole region with information, education and counselling programs to be made available at the centre.

DONATE TODAY!!!

You can help support this important community project by making a donation to the Albury Wodonga Accommodation Centre Appeal. Please click here and follow the prompts.

All donations of $2 and over are tax deductible.

For more information on CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITES please contact the Fight Cancer Foundation on 03 9342 7888

Low cost comfortable accommodation for patients, carers and their families in Tasmania.

Many residents throughout the state of Tasmania find it necessary to attend hospitals in the Hobart area often for life saving treatment. Until recently, patients, their carers and families found the cost of overnight accommodation prohibitive to the extent that patients were foregoing treatment because they couldn’t afford the cost of a hotel or motel. The Fight Cancer Foundation saw a need to help all Tasmanians access Hobart’s hospitals by providing affordable, comfortable accommodation and in November 2008 opened the Fight Cancer Foundation John Opie House.

Housed in an historic, 159 year old building (1850) and only a 5 minute walk to the Royal Hobart Hospital, the John Opie House can accommodate up to 20 patients and their carers, per night. The House has two communal lounge areas and a spacious kitchen and dining area where guests can relax, cook their meals and mingle. Well equipped with electronic diversions to occupy minds both young and old, the warm and welcoming atmosphere is designed to give an often much needed boost to all who stay there.

Since the House opened, more than 300 patients, carers and their families have made the John Opie House their ‘home away from home’. Here are two stories of families who have stayed at the House.
