Who can do the challenge?
The 10km challenge is suitable for all ages of a reasonable fitness level. Small children may need access to a “trail-friendly” pusher or bicycle to complete the distance.
The 25km challenge would be for people of fitness.
It would not be suitable for children under 10 years of age, and older children should be able to complete on mountain / hybrid bikes. Walking participants are expected to maintain 4-5km per hour throughout the day. A slower pace than this may mean you will be asked to withdraw.
The 50km challenge is best suited to the people of fitness who run, walk or cycle on a regular basis, and do a level of training. You should have successfully completed at a minimum a 25km walk prior to this event. The 50km trail is not suitable to bike riding. Walking participants are expected to maintain 4-5km per hour throughout the day. A slower pace than this may mean you will be asked to withdraw.
Purists may need to walk some extra distance at Lake Weeroona to complete the exact full 50km distance.
How long should the Challenge take?
The 10km Challenge, allow 3 hours if walking, 1 -2 hours if running or cycling.
The 25 km challenge, allow 5 - 6 hours if walking, and 2 – 3 hours if running or cycling.
If you are walking the 50km Challenge, allow 10 - 12 hours. Running allow 6 hours.
What will I need to carry on the day?
You will be issued with an entry number at registration and will need to confirm this at each checkpoint
Good shoes – wear them in prior to the event
Insect repellent, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, jacket (weather dependent) - insect repellent and sunscreen will also be available at all checkpoints
Water / water bottle – top up water will also be available at all checkpoints
Food / snacks – lunch will be also available at Axedale (25km) checkpoint, an order form will be sent out with your pre-registration pack
Bandaids / blister packs
Note: Checkpoints will be situated at 12.5km, 25km, 32km, 40km and 45km mark
Are there toilets / drink stations along the way?
Portaloos (toilets) available at most checkpoints
Top up water available at all checkpoints
Checkpoints 12.5km, 25km, 32.5km 40km and 45km mark
Will there be help along the way?
St Johns Ambulance on duty for the day, as well as a back up vehicle travelling all day with mobile phone contact with all checkpoints
Carry your own blister treatment, this tends to be the biggest problem for participants.
Where to leave the car?
10km challenge participants can park at Somerset Park Road and buses will transport you back to your car
25 km challenge participants can park at Axedale Cemetery and buses will transport you back to your car
50km challenge participants can park at rear of RSL Hall, Hospital Street and buses will transport you back to your car
Bike riders will be expected to transport their own bikes to the start of their ride. A secure bike compound will be available at the finish.
Training
Participants are responsible for their own training with a suggestion of building up some distance over the next few months. A distance of at least 25km should be successfully completed before attempting a 50km walk.
It is important to wear in your shoes prior to event.
Some training suggestions will be sent out with your pre-registration pack.
