Adriana's Story
Adriana could hardly believe she was saying those words to her children. Yet when she walked out of the doctor’s room seven years ago after hearing her diagnosis of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, she was totally unprepared.
When Adriana’s son asked if she was going to die, she simply tried to be as truthful as she could.
If you or someone you love has been through cancer treatment, you’ll know it’s a battle on all fronts. First it hits you physically:
Then there is the emotional toll. Adriana battled to stay optimistic in the face of relapse after relapse.
As the endless months of chemotherapy treatments passed another major setback – her left kidney had to be removed, and then one day that awful word: relapsed.
Adriana was booked in for a bone marrow transplant after six long years of having chemotherapy – the final battle to save her life. This is when things got really hard for Adriana and her family:
“On the 14 March 2015 I went into isolation to start the transplant. I then had to wait 100 days in isolation. It was there that Fight Cancer Foundation came to my rescue and provided clean, wonderful accommodation near the hospital for me and my family.”
You might already know something of the strain a family faces during cancer. It puts a huge strain on household expenses. On top of this, families are also often separated further straining marriages and family relationships.
Adriana agrees, “Cancer is an awful journey. There is no advice on how long it will take, what will happen and when….”
She adds, “My family is so grateful for the help of Fight Cancer Foundation. We are from the country and don’t know how we could have coped without this generosity.
Just before Christmas I started on the usual battery of tests and this time around I passed with flying colours.
The bone marrow transplant saved my life. I will continue tests and scans, but after 7 years of worry and stress this is nothing.”
