Bev's Story
linkIf you know anyone who has had to fight cancer, you’ll understand how heartbreaking the journey to survive can be.
When Bev Gibbon’s daughter Wendy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014, the family were hopeful for a full recovery. After receiving treatment at her local hospital, the family suffered another blow in late 2015 when Wendy was diagnosed with a brain tumour.
When Wendy was referred to a major treating hospital several hours from her home for treatment, the family was thrown into turmoil as they needed to be by Wendy’s side to be able to support her. Fight Cancer Foundation was able to offer the family comfortable and safe accommodation at one of their accommodation centres much to the relief of Wendy’s family.
“We felt fortunate to be by Wendy’s side as she struggled through her treatment.”
Bev is grateful for the support that they found at the accommodation centre. Wendy needed multiple brain operations to remove the tumour, “The accommodation provided next to the hospital made our lives so much easier. We also experienced great care from the team at Fight Cancer Foundation,” she says.
On the 5th April Wendy was back in hospital but never regained consciousness again and sadly passed away later that day, surrounded by her family.
Every parent fears the loss of a child, as you expect your children to outlive you. Bev and her family have been deeply impacted by the disease that took Wendy’s life and want every family to have the same opportunity to be together throughout their fight against cancer.
