Special Mention Award 2016 - Blacktown Youth College
Uniting in the fight against cancer can happen in many ways – it takes a whole team to fight against cancer and this year Blacktown Youth College showed they are key team members in making a difference for kids with cancer.
“Many of our students have been affected by cancer through family and/or friends and Footy Colours Day helps them to recognise they are not alone in their journey,” said Nicole Brown, Student Development and Community Liaison Coordinator.
Located in the suburbs of Western Sydney and supporting three local housing commission estates, Blacktown Youth College helps students from Years 7 to 10 who may struggle in a mainstream school environment by providing the opportunity to experience educational and personal development in a smaller school environment. The school is an independent, non-denominational, co-educational school that charges no fees or extra subject costs.
“While our school community is not in a position to raise money for Footy Colours Day, we participate in the spirit of the day by encouraging our students to represent their team and undertake fitness activities. We also use the day as an opportunity to educate students on the experiences of young Australians living with cancer. This forms part of their personal development and helps them to understand empathy and compassion,” said Ms Brown.
“Blacktown Youth College looks forward to being a part of Footy Colours Day for many years to come.”
We are thrilled to highlight the way Blacktown Youth College is helping raise awareness of Footy Colours Day and the impact of cancer on young learners – and award them a Special Mention Award.
