Spencer's Run to Give Hope
Joining TEAM Fight Cancer at Run Melbourne on Sunday 28 July is high school student, Spencer.
Spencer is running to fight cancer in honour of his mother who was diagnosed with breast cancer when Spencer was only seven months old.
“Being so young I don’t remember my mum having cancer but growing up and learning about what she endured with her battle was phenomenal. Thankfully she was able to win her fight against cancer and has been cancer free for about 16 years. The resilience and courage she showed is a real testament to the person she is and the way she has raised me,” said Spencer.
The courage of Spencer’s mum during her fight against cancer continues to inspire Spencer.
“During her chemotherapy, she lost all the hair on her body but still had the courage to jump in the pool with me during swimming lessons even though there were complete strangers around. She didn’t fear being judged and that to me is extremely admirable.”
However it is not just Spencer’s mother’s courageous battle that has motivated Spencer to run as part of TEAM Fight Cancer. Spencer who is currently in Year 11 also admires the courage shown by his school captain who was diagnosed with cancer last year.
“Being diagnosed with cancer during his final year at school drastically affected his ability to complete his studies. He missed a lot of school for obvious reasons but was still able to be an extraordinary captain for my school. The strength and courage he possessed was one of his many great traits. I felt due to these reasons that it was extremely fitting for me to raise money for Fight Cancer Foundation as the cause is very close to my heart.”
Speaking on what he hopes his fundraising efforts will achieve Spencer said, “Ultimately, I just hope that I am able to give other people hope and make a difference in their lives whether it’s big or small. I hope it contributes to educating children with cancer as it is extremely unfair for them not to get an education just because of this terrible disease.”
